Our Mission
Homework Theater Company is a New York based theater collective focused on making the work of emerging theater makers accessible to the public. Sprung out of the necessity to create new plays, Homework Theater Company sets out to uplift artists who have just begun their journey.
Our Mission is to allow growing artists to showcase and workshop their own work.
Founded in 2023 by Borana Ramizi and Francis MacCall, Homework Theater Company seeks to create a space for writers, actors, directors, and designers who have been left discouraged and lost following a “post pandemic” society. Starting in a humble rehearsal space, Homework Theater Company began with regular meetings with writers Paige Reyna, Niara Mae, Tasja Drahveen, and Dylan Gottlieb, who helped lay the groundwork for how this company intends to approach producing theater.
We know far too many talented, intelligent, and eager artists who have simply not been given the right opportunity, despite putting in countless effort into their craft. In an industry that is rapidly becoming more difficult to navigate, it can be hard to know where to turn or how to keep up. We provide time and accountability for these artists. Honing your craft takes discipline and work, and we aim to create a space that develops the work that needs to be done “at home”. Our goal is to reclaim our integrity by creating opportunities for ourselves and our peers. We do not want to wait any longer.
With an emphasis on new work, our company heavily relies on a workshopping process, followed by regular readings and writing sessions. The creation process is what is most important to our company, and we believe the best creation is never done alone. Being a part of Homework is being comfortable with making mistakes, striving to try out new things, and maybe even taking on roles that you may not have even thought of trying. If you’re an actor who wants to write a play, come to Homework. If you’re a director who wants to try a hand at acting in a 10 minute play, come to Homework. If you have a vision, but need support, come ‘do’ your Homework with us.
We would like to thank the Dramatists Guild Foundation for their continued support for artists.
